Guest Speaker: Dr. Daniel Zielinski
Dr. Daniel Zielinski is a Computational Engineer with the Great Lakes Fishery Commission and project lead on the bi-directional selective fish passage (FishPass) project. Dr. Zielinski received his B.S. in civil engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. He has published 12 peer-reviewed articles and given 30+ research presentations detailing behavioral responses of fish to acoustic and hydrodynamic stimuli and integration of this data into numerical models. Although an engineer by training, his interests are broadly focused on integrating engineering and biological principles to better understand how the aquatic environment influences physical and behavioral responses in fish. Prior to joining the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, Dr. Zielinski worked with the Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center at the University of Minnesota developing behavioral control tools to block the movement of invasive common and Asian carp. He is stationed at the USGS Hammond Bay Biological Station in Millersburg, MI and is working with FishPass project partners to develop a facility design, research and assessment plans, and communicating with stakeholders.
